What is the best way to conduct market research for a computer repair business?

Me and a friend are considering starting our own computer repair business, however we'd like to carry out some market research before deciding to invest any money. The only strategy we have thought of so far is to stand in a crowded shopping mall and ask people to complete a survey but we doubt this will be effective.

I would appreciate any suggestions on other types of market research or confirmation that surveying is a good method and also how many people we should survey to make our data credible.

Reply:I strongly prefer a circumcised penis for anything sexual, in fact I am very turned off by the uncircumcised penis and have not done anything beyond a handjob with a guy who has one. Circumcision makes the penis MUCH more appealing for all sexual activities, but especially for giving bjs, because that way you can see the whole head and know that he is clean. I also much prefer a circum penis for straight intercourse because you can feel the hard ridge of his penis head. I have not (and don't plan to) have sex with an uncircum guy, but I have heard the feeling is less satisfying because the skin gets in the way and dulls the sensations for both of you.

it's easy to get biased data either from surveying the wrong population or by designing bad questions, they should be relevant, clear and easy to understand, allowing for all possible answers, not leading, unambigous and remember that people might not answer the questions truthfully.

3 ways of doing a survey:

Reply:Advantages - Mass amounts of data. May easily be quantifiable. Quick to get.

Disadvantages - Hard to qualify data. Can't delve deeper into responses. Hard to master the 'art of the questionnaire.'

A loaded question is one where you end up leading the answerer. It can give you a biased result.

For example: "What kind of hobbies do you enjoy? (for example fishing, swimming, hiking...)" is a loaded question. The person answering might think you want outdoors type hobbies or sports.

Another: "How good do you feel when you eat peanut butter?" This is kinda going under the assumption the answerer likes peanut butter to begin with and may skew results.

It's appropriate to use focus groups when you want the participants to be able to draw upon each others answers. They can respond off each other. A lot of times, this will have the person giving it turning into the role of mediator. This can be good when you're not sure where you are going with the questions and let the group keep their own pace while you keep them 'on topic'. It can be bad if you want specific answers and/or perhaps want to delve more deeply into a specific persons answers; you also tend to loose control of where the question/information goes... this can be a good or bad thing.
Reply:The problem with surveys is that they are not all well written, nor well administered.

A loaded question is one that subconsciously directs a person to give a desired response. For example:

Do you think it would be a good idea to ban the sale of cigarettes within a ten block radius of schools, to prevent an increase in smoking addiction among young people?

Who in their right mind is going to give a reply that ensorses encouraging an increase in smoking addiction among young people?

Focus groups can be helpful if the groups can easily get together and if they are drawn from a range of opinions, social strata, races, ethnic groups, economic groups etc. But some focus groups just become a mirror of the researcher, and are predisposed to agree with the study and with each other. A good strong dissenting voice is sometimes difficult to find.

It's appropriate to use a focus group if they have knowledge of a specific topic surveyed.

-Makes me calm. Well, actually, I guess it's because it makes feel like someone out there feels the same way I do when the artist wrote the song. I'm always noticing that I isolate myself from everyone else, and I don't know why. Music helps me realize things and feelings put into words I couldn't have put myself. I don't know if it puts me in a better mood, but it helps me lose concentration on things I should be concentrating on, and I'm grateful for that.

I'm looking into a job on a survey vessel and the only thing I'm worried about is being so uncomfortable that I can't enjoy my job. There is no specific vessel that I would be working on, so I'm just looking for general information. Also if anyone has anything they would like to share concerning living on an oceanic survey or research vessel I'd love to hear it.

I am a Deist. Everything that happens is a reaction to some other action, which in turn is a reaction to something else, etc. Eventually, there is one original cause of action, an "unmoved mover", who I call God. God created the universe, set it in motion, then walked away. He does not interfere in the world, he has no need to.

Truths can all be found by rationalization and study of the surround universe.

There are no prophets, messiahs, holy books, or miracles. There is no need. If there were need for all of this, God would have made an error.

I believe in Deism because I can think for myself and it is a rational religion that answers my own questions about the world (to me it is illogical to say that things got so bad in the world that God had to send a Son down to try and straighten everything up).

Because God gave man a brain, he expects him to use it. And for this reason, there can be no compulsion in religion. Everyone must find God in their own way, and if they chose to become Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, etc., then that is their business.
Reply:I am in a crisis of faith. I was raised Roman Catholic. I definitely do not fit the mold for that denomination. How ever I still consider my self a pseudo Christian. I don't know what is real and what is not about the gospels and the old tesitment. I feel that Jesus is the model of human psychology and the means for social justice. I think there are allot more cans in Jesus' teachings that though shalt not.

1: I believe that Jesus was the perfect human and by following his example we too can be come more human the way God intended us to be.

2: I believe in the forgivenesss of sins. Two parts to that. I need God's forgivenes and the Churches. One my sin is always against god and it also against the body of Christ of which I consider my self part of.

3: I don't know that Jesus is coming back as Revelation seems to indicate. I think the Church is the Anima Christi. The spirit of Christ in the real world.

4: I don't know that I believe in original sin and that Christ had to die for our salvation. If Christ could forgive sins before he was crucified why did he need to be crucified? That is a big mystery to me.

I really can't say what my religion makes me do as I said I think many would not call me a christian at all.

Reply:I believe that reason combined with experience is the only way to know anything. I believe this because it's axiomatic. In order to deny it I must use it, so I can not deny it even though I can not prove it either.

I believe 'faith', as used in a religious sense, is closely related to 'stupidity'. Faith is belief without reason. In all nonreligious matters, that is considered stupidity. I don't make an exception for religion.

There are examples of this. There was a guy at Bell Labs who was using noise from old data and calling it new data. Someone noticed.

The techniques he used are not well described in Wiki, but if you hunt around the web, you might find something.

The real problem with falsifying data is people won't be able to duplicate the work so they will start looking hard at the publications to see what is going on and will eventually find problems with them or conclude the initial results are incorrect somehow. If people aren't having problems while trying to duplicate and build on the work, then the work is irrelevant anyway.

This guy had his doctorate revoked by his Uni and can't apply for grants from the German equivalent of the US National Science Foundation.

The reason falsifying data is such a big deal in science is because people will waste resources and time trying to build on the results. This is unconscionable in chronically underfunded fields. From the wiki article

Reply:The most obvious way is to just write the readings/results you want. "Pretend" that those were your actual results. If you write down the procedures the correct way, then if anybody ever investigates, they'll see you did it right. Unless your made up data is way out of line (like saying it took 100 mL of 1 M NaOH to neutralize 10 mL 1 M HCl - at equal molarity, M, it will take equal amounts of a strong acid and strong base to neutralize each other), no one will no the difference. They'll believe the data.

If someone comes along behind the nefarious scientist and tries to duplicate the testing and gets different results (as s/he will), the bad scientist can play like s/he must have made a mistake somewhere...but s/he can't find where...blah blah blah...

Depending on the research type, there may be other ways, too. Like if it is supposed to be a random sampling and the scientist specifically picks things that will give him/her the results s/he wants.

Some fields are so unprovable that you could collect data, and then ask a question to which the data would fit, with 95% confidence. I believe that there is a correlation between IQ and shoe size.

If you woke up, tomorrow, as the last person on earth, what are some of the things you would want to do?

Things to think about….

1: How long will electricity be available?

2: how would you attempt to cross the ocean? Or would you?

3: After a good majority of the food in grocery stores has gone bad, how long will canned food last?

4: Will gasoline ferment into a substance that no longer works in cars?

Okay, first I'll admit to being odd, but this is actually something I've thought about quite a bit and I've asked other people this same question. It's amazing how bad their answers were.

The first thing I would do would be to move to a place with a long growing season because growing one's own food would become necessary.

Second - I would select a suitable house with lots of other buildings nearby to use for storage. I would definitely look for a farm with outbuildings and fenced in areas. A farm pond for some fish would be useful. A woodstove for cooking and heating the house would be essential.

Third - It would be necessary to round up a certain number of animals and animal feed! At least some horses to pull wagons and plows, some cattle, and some chickens.

Fourth - I would start stockpiling things while I could. Pumps (both water and fuel) are electric and will eventually be useless. In the meantime, I would scrounge through hardware stores, pharmacies, grocery stores, department stores, and bookstores for items to store (tools, clothing, bedding, towels, flour, sugar, spices, canned goods, some basic first aid supplies, and lots of HOW TO BOOKS as well as some books for entertainment. Remember no radio and no TV in my future. I have ONE BIG advantage over some people in this since I actually know how to drive an 18-wheeler so I would simply load up trailer after trailer with my supplies and park them at the house I've chosen.

GASOLINE GOES BAD AFTER A RATHER SHORT TIME SO IT CAN NOT BE COUNTED ON.

FINAL IMPORTANT POINT - IF I AM THE ONLY ONE LEFT - THEN STEALING IS NO LONGER A CONCEPT.

Canned goods could last years--five or so.

Gasoline could/would work as long as it's systems for avoiding water/contamination of tanks would hold...hard to say how long it would remain pure. But it wouldn't ferment exactly.

All these questions remind of one of the best books I've ever read called Emergence by David R. Palmer. It came out in the 80s but if you can find it, lucky you! Lots of fascinating details about what being the last survivor of a world disaster would be like...

We are having a lot going on with the Wage Issues of our custodial staff. They are GROSSLY underpaid and it is a serious issue. I would like to do my sociological research on this but can't quite figure out what variables to make a prediciton on and how one would affect the other...anyone have any ideas? I can do a simple survey research method so it doesn't have to be complicated but it's due TOMORROW. To make up for my procrastination I would like to do a subject with some substance =) HELP!

Document a case study of one or more of the lower paid custodial staff listing the effects that arise as a result of their lack of income. Pull out all the stops--health, suicide, divorce etc. Don't forget to include something about the knock on effects on family, students and the reputation of the faculty.

If you're trying to make the case that the custodians of Berkeley are underpaid relative to, say, custodians of other colleges, then the really accurate way to prove it is to do a t-test of of two sample means, in which you compare the mean income of the custodians at Berkeley against the mean income of custodians at several other colleges. To get the incomes of the custodians at your school, you could ask them for it, telling them it's all for a good cause and individuals responses will be confidential. However, you might have trouble obtaining the mean income of custodians at other colleges, since you don't go to those schools, and their administration may be reluctant to release that information.

However, if you simply want to show the administration of Berkeley how the students feel about the custodian's pay, you could ask the custodian's for their pay, taking the average, and then write a one question survey targeted to the students: "Our custodians make $XXX on average. To what extent do you feel that this is sufficient pay?" The choices could be a 5-point scale. As for predictor variables, I'd suggest asking for the student's level (Freshman, Sophomore, etc), as that can have a significant impact on the results (i.e., students who've been around longer have had the opportunity to need custodians more so than younger students)

I am confused and dont know whether to cash the check and go on a shopping spree or remain confused lol. Reply:There are a lot of scams going on right now with checks. You need to take your check to the police department and have them check it out. If they say it is okay, then you will be blessed. I know for a fact that at my facility, it is for anyone that uses needles. Diabetics, anemics, cancer patients, or drug addicts.

They can bring in their used needles in a container that is puncture proof, and we will give them new needles and a bio-harzard sharps container.

The reason this was put into effect was because drug users, or medical reasons, patients were using needles over and over because the cost, or they are drug addicts and can't just go buy needles to use.

This cuts down on infections, disease spreading rates and allows us to get rid of them the proper way, instead of people throwing them in the regular trash and someone else getting stuck either while going through the garbage, or at the dump. Or really anywhere inbetween.

Reply:My first thought is that it encourages drug use by providing clean needles for drug users. Your second question is answered by my first answer. The exchange program may in a small way be helpful in fighting HIV/AIDS but it is counterproductive in fighting drug abuse.

Reply:While I do not support IV drug use I would hate to know people are sharing needles. So if they must "use" it's good to know with HIV.. they can have a safe "haven" for drugs.

I think it helps fight HIV yes. But I do not thing it helps a druggie it enables them. However if it is one less thing they deal with, so be it.
Reply:Needle exchange - an excellent idea for many reasons. Take the used needles and syringes from drug abusers and give them a fresh safe needle. They safely dispose of the used/contaminated syringes. It save the used syringes from ending up in parks , playgrounds, school yards and kiddie land at McDonalds. Children pick them up , step on them or fall on them. They don't need to be infected with any of the horrific diseases that these needles carry.

Hopefully when the user comes in to exchange the needle there is someone there to talk to them to get them off drugs. A freindly, knowledgeable , probably ex user, who knows the horrors this kind of life holds.

If these exchanges are careful and get the trust of the users, it will definately help lower AIDS.

Reply:A mystery shopper is someone who goes through the customer process at a business in order to report back to management on the customer experience.

Mystery shopping is a legitimate business but if you didn't sign up for the job before they would not send you an advance check. It may be some sort of scam. Are you sure it is a real check and not a promotional fake?

You should call the company to clarify how they got your name and what their expectations are. If they ask for any money up front (application fee, etc.) then hang up because they are not legit.

I think there are many educational toys that do not capture the imagination of children, but only fulfil the guilt-trip of hard working parents who do not think they are involved enough. I think there is a lack of good quality, truly fun (entertaining and engaging) educational toys.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a good research topic for a class I'm taking in college. I want to do something in the field of Sports Marketing but I am having a hard time thinking of topics that are testable. By testable I mean that these topics need to be tested through surveys, sampling, etc.

What would be a good Sports Marketing Research topic (study)? Something that can be researched and tested?
A few ideas:

is there interest in selling assigned seating to games played in a bleacher style gym - some people like the top row where there is some back support; some like front row; others want something else? you could do a survey of people on their way into the gym, find out how much they'd be willing to pay, see if it is a total bomb - just make sure you tell them it is just for your class or you'll have some folks ticked off forever....

find out if there is interest in starting a Bball or hockey or tennis or ??? exhibition match. Like the pre-season BBall tournaments in Hawaii and Alaska (great Alaska shootout). Obviously this might be bigger than you could pull off, but you could find out if there is interest in the topic. Once again, the preseason tourneys recruit student atheletes. A Division II student has little worries about getting on national TV - unless their university has a big tournament that draws division I players - the television of the events on ESPN is what draws good Div. II players to the school - and it helps athletes get exposure.

Smaller items - new surface of an athletic field, roof for it, or build it period..... sold by a marketing idea - an auction for sports related items, dinner made by coach, selling labor of football team members for a day (money goes to team not to player).

I go to Wendys alot for their chili and baked potatoes and McD's for their yogurt and chicken wraps(grilled,no sauce) Burger Kings beef burgers and veggie burgers are good. Pizza Huts pizza is great. Depends on what you want to know. Generally people are willing to tell you about what they already purchase or do, and get impatient with doing all your homework for you. Ask about what they're already doing with the service if it's currently offered by anyone else. Then ask for one or two things they might improve.

If you were starting a courier service, you'd want to know how long it typically takes from phone call to the dispatcher and the courier picking up the package, whether that's satisfactory, and how much they charge. Maybe they might like an after-hours option and weekends.

If you were doing building maintenance/janitorial work, then you'd ask if they have time to do it themselves, would they want someone to come in for two hours on the weekends and do the floors and windows, etc.

Market research is about finding little holes to plug. Keep it short, and try a few methods -- first over the phone, but if they don't have time offer to fax the survey. Mail it with a postage-paid return envelope as a last resort. If you want quality answers you need to make it really easy for them to participate. The good news is that small business owners tend to look out for each other, so if you tell them what you're trying to do, most will be happy to help out.

Another way would be demographics i.e. if you conduct a survey of teen-age related problems in a convalescent home where survey participants are old people, Also, if you conduct a research on eating habits of Asian people by testing products on Caucasians the results would be ineffectual or skewed or biased....

Im conducting an experiment, and I have almost everything I need in order to complete my experiment, but I also want to ask a survey to see if the questions I ask effect the answer of the person give according to the paper. Reply:In order to prove this you have to hide the actual purpose of the survey. Put the respondents in a monocolor environment, then use Likert scale questions to determine their mood. If you do not have the resources to change the entire environment, you could prove something just by putting the mood survey on different color papers.

I know there has been studies in the past about how color affects moral, work, and productivity. They basically modified the colors then observed the effects. Model the same idea but use a survey to measure the mood.
Reply:I am assuming you meant that you would be using different colored paper to put the same survey on... i.e. red paper with questions a-g then blue paper with questions a-g and so on....

You should ask emotion-type questions. Word them differently for the different colors but keep them the same premise.

Ask questions that would provoke strong emotions so you can get clear answers. Give them situational questions. What would you do in this situation? Give scenerios and keep them consistent from paper to paper. That way the questions are your constant.

However there are some factors that determine the number of surveys you can receive and of course you can make these factors act for you, some of these factors are:

1. You must complete all of your profiles and provide all of your personal data. As some surveys are subjected to a certain kind of people. For example, if a company manufactures mobile phones, they will only send surveys to people using mobile phones specially those using their products to know their feedbacks. Also some surveys may be subjected to people with a certain age say 18-30 years.

2. You must complete every survey you receive as soon as you can as more surveys are sent to active members.

3. Try to be realistic and honest in your answers and do not give useless answers.

Also the number of surveys depends on your location and country. For example, US members receive more surveys as many us comapnies wants to know the opinion of the American consumers only as they are the majority of their customers.

I have taken your survey and answered to the best of my ability.

If the purpose of the class is to see how a survey works, then this will probably do it.

If the purpose of the class is to learn how to design a form that helps determine values or truths in marriages or relationships, then this survey seems to lack much. You miss things like commitment, honesty, trust, and love.

You talk about cheaper being single or married (I chose single because we have four boys) but marriage isn't about how expensive it is at all.

My view of marriage (or a successful relationship) is about what you put into it... not what you get out. It is about demonstrating a willingness to work through every issue, to honor the commitment through thick and thin, and to seek the common good.

I hope you can feed back to the instructor that there are lots of "value" questions that really get at the heart of marriage, much more so than "cost" or "quantity" questions. My suggestion is to revise the questionnaire.

I run a small business selling women's celebrity-style acceossories. I need to find out who my specific target audience is and I've got some research to do. I've already put up a survey on my site and I've got results from 55 women so far but the information is not enough. I need MORE results than that. What resources can I look into for information on my target market (whom I can't define, just yet)?

Find what I call a sister business that co insides with your own. If you sell women's accessories, find a local women's dress shop that caters to all ages. Ask the owner if you can do some market research in her shop. Take a small table and display your products. Prepare a survey sheet and ask questions such as age group, what you like about product, would you purchase this product and if so why, how much would you pay for this product, etc. This should provide you with a target group. Also to get store owner to go along, offer to give away a few products as door prizes to her customers. Note you may even gain a client. If the store owner sees a great interest in your product from their customers, they may ask to feature your products in their store. Good Luck

Not all of theirs pay though, some just enter you into a drawing to win money. You can choose which ones you want to take though.

Legitimate market survey companies such as Pinecone Research recruit members based on demographic characteristics -- e.g. mothers of babies 0-12 years old -- and will send surveys of products and services targeting this demographic group. Pinecone Research, however, pays only $5 per survey -- you're definitely not going to be rich with that. They can give you anywhere from 1-5 at most surveys in a month.

Other companies simply ask you to answer as many research as possible, and you don't earn anything just the chance to win at a raffle (which I find lame).

Reply:I found one that would pay $1.00 - $5.00 per survey. I did that for a while and after about 6 months I had gotten $3.00 total.

One problem was the surveyors were looking for very specific demographics and you would spend 20 minutes on a pre-survey to find out if you qualified.

Then it would take 3-6 months for them to send you the money, and most of them never paid.

The site shut down shortly there after.

I have a sociology project I'm working on but I need to figure out some good topics to research.

Any topics that relate to health and college students (remember I am only surveying MY COLLEGE...not colleges around the world) -

Anything about how things affect college students;

Think in terms of social networks (students interacting with peers). Remember this is a sociology project, not psychology. So I need to keep the research focused on GROUPS of studnets...or interaction between students. :)

Never join any sites that require a sign up fee as they are almost always scams.

I have been taking paid surveys for nearly a year now, it takes me around 10 minutes every second day, and I make about $80 - $100 a month which isn't bad for the amount of time it takes me.

i dunno how easy this would be, but what about the theory called the Oedipus complex. Its the theory of why guys tend to marry women like their mother and daughters like their fathers. I found it interesting because my mom was in and out of me and my brothers life when we were kids so i basically raised him cause my dad worked all the time. He ended up marry a girl exactly like me - same birthday, same middle name, same height, and acted just like me.

or another good one i heard was how when you are in class alot of professors tend to refer to everything in the male sense of a word,(ie - when speaking about God, we always say he.) i read where a male student had a female professor that changed everything to reflect the female version of the word. So if when speaking about God, she would say she. And you dont realize how it affects how you feel about being excluded from a group. I'm starting a job on Monday taking surveys over the phone for market research. I'm not selling anything, basically just doing questionaires from what I understand. I want to know to expect. Do most of the people respond positively? Is it a frustrating job? Anything else I should know?

Expect a lot of people to be angry at you for having their number and calling them in the first place. I did this work too for some quick cash in college, and have to say it made me a little emotional. Try not to take the rejection personally.

There will be some you call that are nice enough to take the survey, primarly older people or those you call after dinner time (before or during will be most annoyed). Because i work in marketing, I always do surveys like that cause I understand.

In terms of your question about telephone surveys, it all comes down back to what goal you're trying to achieve. Typically a "random digit dial" method is used within a specific geographic area to get results that are representative of that area. If you have customer list...just call the customers.

After having done this you can determine what is the best possible way that you mite get the correct results of your research. Some methods used are extensive and simple surveys, or obtain past records from similar companies of goods that you intend to deal on. Maybe you can also try find statistics from related sources and be resourceful in your ways. e.g. If I want to launch a new toilet seat and pot company in Ethiopia, I might want to go to the health department and find out the food habits of the people of Ethiopia to know the correct usage and thereby, the demand for toilets. Each technique you ask about above has methodologies and pros/cons associated with the technique.

For example:

In person interviews are expensive and very limiting to a rather small group of people. This is commonly referred to as "focus group" studies.

Telephone surveys are getting more and more difficult with the new Do Not Call law. Only legitimate market researches that have registered with the FTC can conduct research, other than that, any other company that calls its customers has to have a relationship in place with those customers (no more cold calling.)

Mail Surveys are great, but limiting in terms of the complexity of the surveys that you can administer. And, with so much junk mail and a 2% open rate common, it's expensive.

Online surveys are the best thing that happened to Market Reserach in my opinion, however, even this method has issues. Anti-spam laws, overprotected inboxes, and lack of a reliable, projectible sample for b2b and small attractive segments of the ppopulation (e.g. the wealthy), make it difficult to deliver without lots of resources.

Most lists, whether mail, phone, or email ARE PERMISSION BASED and you do pay for them.

In my case this is true. I used to live in MI and would always go on vacation to some place tropical. Now, I live in GA and I vacation where ever I want, usually cold places, because it is always sunny and warm here.

I remember having an argument with someone about the importance of people coming here to New Zealand to shoot and hunt animals (in particular Deer, Chamois, Thar...all introduced animals) while I was all for killing them off (or at least as much as we can) and focus on ecotourism eg whale watching, swimming with dolphins, nature walks etc

It brings in lots of money to get people to kill wild animals but what about the envrionment (ie they damage the natural environment and ruin it for everyone) and while they make up a small proportion of the tourists here they spend a lot of money doing it......While ecotourism or at least using nature to bring in tourists should bring in more people....

The real question is why do you believe there is an issue?

What information do you have at the moment?

The best surveys are ones that are developed around your company issues, structures and needs.

There are some great books and packs available commercially that can help here = one in particular comes to mind - "activities for unblocking organizational communication".

Communications or culture?

Often people claim 'communications here are bad' this is a generic complaint but often this is the SYMPTOM not the underlying problem. Often the real issues are with goals, management style and organizational culture.

If you use an organizational diagnostic approach (much more broad based) then this will not only cover communications but culture and style issues too.

Reply:You should be more worried about the design of your survey, the sampling plan, and assumptions required to analyze the data.

First, your data are already going to be biased and results will only refer to UNIVERSITY LEVEL STUDENTS. You cannot limit your survey to that sample and then extrapolate to some unwordly universe of people.

Therefore, take what you already know....you must survey UNIVERSITY LEVEL STUDENTS and ask them questions that are applicable to that group.

For instance, what subject , of those listed, in school is your favorite and THEN give them a finite number of subjects......math, english, physics, geography and history

Then ask what is their favorite hobby from your given list. For example, computers, reading, wrtiting poetry, outdoor athletic activites, and watching TV.

Sample a large number of UNIVERSITY LEVEL STUDENTS and do a categorical data analysis to determine if a relation exists between subject liked and favorite hobby.

The above is just a middle of the night thought. To help better I need to know much more about the proposed research project and your level of statistical knowledge.

They are run by builder organizations. Modular Council is run by the factory-built housing industry (manufactured and modular homes) and the NAHB site is run by the National Association of Home Builders (site-built builders).

Both sites have a lot of information, I am not sure if you will find a questionnaire report.

Remember also that there is a difference between a modular home vs. a manufactured home. A modular home is built to the same local building code as a site built home and finances just like a site-built home. A manufactured home is built to the national HUD-code. Over the past few years, financing has become much more difficult for this type of home.

1. disagree. Willingness to be involved with someone else does not mean one is polyamourous, or even promiscious. One can practice serial long-term monogamy, but simply not have set limits on the gender of one's next partner (let alone dating that never reaches sex).

Whatever age you are, you'll only ever receive a few surveys from any one company which is why the key to a regular income is signing up to a large number of companies. The best way to do this is to work through one of the many free online survey directories but in your case you are somewhat restricted by your age.

Luckily though there are a few companies that accept members under 18 and some like Choozz that are specifically aimed at teens and/or children. Take a look at http://www.whichsurveys.com/usteensurvey... which lists panels looking for younger members. They also have separate listings for UK and international teens.

It's also worth noting that all panels sometimes require the opinion of children and teens but will address the surveys to the parent so see if you can persuade your mom to sign up and pass the surveys to you. My 11 year old son gets quite a few surveys this way.

I would go on line and join a few other survey sites and take in the Q %26amp; A's. You can learn a lot from how to ask questions to how to use the answers. I use Google and Dogpile as my search sites and type in survey. It is amazing how many companies will ask for your input and some will even pay you for your thoughts. Could use this to supplement your college fund!
Reply:Well look at a course guide for a college and find what books they have as required reading for their marketing type classes, probably one or another will be related. Also if you go to a University Bookstore they will probably have more books on those type of topics than you might find at your normal bookstore.

How to reward/thank those who help you with scholarly research?

In my line of work I do a lot of scholarly research which requires that I call a bunch of people and ask them questions. Kind of like a high-end survey amongst a select few. I get the data I need from those people in a phone conversation and then generally never speak to them again. That makes me feel bad. Is there some etiquette around how to thank those that provide one with answers/data for research purposes?

How to reward/thank those who help you with scholarly research?
Often you can write an acknowledgments section in the article or book that results and thank them there. And, of course, you could just write a nice handwritten thank you note.
Reply:This is my personal opinion. A short, business-like letter would be appropriate. Written in a manner that the person might be able to use it as an endorsement in the event they might need testimony to further their goals in life.

In other words, be sure to thank them and also mention the value of their help and support, and that their expertise was very useful in completing your research.

I think the terminology is "a survey is a descriptive research method." Descriptive research involves collecting numerical data to test hypotheses or answer questions concerning current status which is then conducted either through self-reports collected through questionnaires or interviews (person or phone), or through observations. I accidentally closed the safari window (my web browser) so I don't have the link for the definition, sorry!

I have seen some survey evidence to show our faith in ourselves and our trust in our peers has been stable and our faith in authority of various kinds has fallen. What I've seen is not very up-to-date though.

This is to substantiate an argument I am making in a speech. I want evidence from market research with percentages. So that I can show eg 20 years ago x % trusted eg advertising and y% trusted companies and now the figures are lower. The actual timespam is not important as long as the recent data is fairly up to date.

An Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded survey found that between 1974 and 2004, trust in Government declined. In 1974, two in five Britons trusted Government to put the nation's needs over those of their party 'always' or 'most of the time'. In 2004, that figure halved to little more than one in five.

General trust across society: At around 40 per cent, the proportion who say that most people can be trusted has changed little over the last two decades.

Reply:There is probably no direct evidence as you have to "define" authority and also "yourself". However, there will be a lot of indirect evidence e.g increasing use of conveyancing forms as opposed to paying a lawyer. Own Tax returns compared to those prepared by accountants etc. Apart form the trust of course is the convenience, cost etc. However there are lies and there is statistics. Your question itself is indicative of this fact. You start off with an assumption and you are only trying to substantiate your arguments and not necessarily after the thruth!

Many sites are setup as a front for harvesting personal information from unsuspecting users. Then they offer incentives for their members to spam forums like this to get new signups.

I am writing a paper for a psychological research proposal and I can't figure out what kind of statistical analyses I need to use. I will be using a survey to collect my data, but my independent variable is race (African American/White). My dependent variable is strength of beliefs. Please help me figure out what kind of analyses need to be done.

What kind of statistical analyses do I need to use for Psyc research proposal?
What sort of survey/questionnaire is it? I am assuming you are using the Likert scale (ie on a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your beliefs strength).

If so, you could use a T Test for Independent Means using the results which would tell you if there is a significant difference between the two ethnicities.

//Edit: You will be adding the true/false responses some way right? With those results, take the means of each ethnicity and use the T Test for Independent Means.
Reply:you'll look more authoritative if you throw in some averages of important data sets...

also try to work in at least one statistic that you can prove at more than 90% confidence...

different professors might be looking for different interpretations of the data (why we have stats in the first place) so include that in your strategy for the paper... stats are important, try to dig up your old stats book or you might even get a cheap old, used text...

if nothing else, I looked over the wikipedia article on statistics and you might find it helpful

Seeing as my answer is from my climate controlled living room, on my electric PC, it would be wrong for me to complain about global warming caused by the increased use of fossil fuel to power my heat and living room. Flying certain people to the poles of the earth to "report" on global warming is 1,000,000 times more of a waste of our resources and hypocritical. The best way to save our planet is to leave the buffoons at the poles, and make sure Al Gore is there with them! Stupid is as stupid does!
